Other Places to Workout Besides the Gym: Workout at Home to Put Your Money to Better Use

After discussing how much valuable time you can save by working out at home, let's take a deeper look at another saving discussed in our eBook, The Ultimate Guide to Home Workouts: the cost of working out at a gym, other places to workout, and the direct impact on your bank account!Let's get started.

Obesity in America

The health club and gym industry is bringing in nearly 22 Billion dollars a year. So why we are we still facing a massive obesity epidemic in the United States in 2018? Nutritional choices play a major role in this and clearly the act of shelling out cash every year for a gym membership isn’t the deciding factor in what's making you healthier. It has everything to do with building positive habits into your life and not how much money you’re spending to “rent” equipment at your gym.

The Costs of the Gym

Let’s take a look at some of those costs and you’ll see how they add up.Joining a gym usually means initiation fees of up to $300. Add a family member and you can expect to tack on a minimum of $50 a month. Expect to pay anywhere from $100 a month for a low end gym and upwards of $225 a month for luxury amenities.Between start up costs and monthly dues, you’ll spend approximately $2500 a year for a single membership. That’s just to grant you access to the equipment and amenities. Remember, you still have to do all the work! Now let’s say you have no clue what you’re doing when you join the gym. Sure you can take the group fitness classes that come with your membership, and they’ll work for a little while, but they aren’t customized to your specific physiology. Those classes are developed to challenge the average attendee. But what about if you want to hire a personal trainer? Costs for that range anywhere from $100 an hour all the way up to $175 an hour at luxury facilities. If you were to train with a trainer at a minimum of 1 time a week, you can expect to tack on another $5200 a year to your expenses. And you still have to drive to the gym for your appointment. And did I mention you still have to do all the work?If you’re investing X dollars each year to reach your health and fitness goals, is the weight on the scale showing the return on your investment?

Other Places to Workout: At Home!

So let’s say you choose to start working out at home, or in your building’s fitness center. Imagine what you could do with an extra $2500 a year in your pocket. That’s a vacation. A mortgage payment. How about, a down payment for a new car? When you workout at home, you’re not only saving yourself a lot of money, and as Will Hansen explained, time. You’re learning how to become resourceful and be able to take workouts with you wherever you are. As our founder and President Dr. Bill Thorpe, who was a collegiate gymnast and built a rock solid body without touching a weight, can tell you: you don’t need fancy equipment to shed a few pounds or add a couple pounds of muscle to your frame. You just need to focus on using your body in a way it was meant to be used.
